Community Forest Campaign

April 14, 2020 by Molly Barritt 1 Comment

I Want To Help Secure The Community Forest Today!

UPDATE: This past Friday we celebrated a new gem on the Kinni! Because of over 100 donors, we were able to reach the fundraising goal of $500,000 and fully purchase and protect The Community Forest on the Kinni. It will be fully open to the public 365 days a year and we look forward to hearing about your adventures in the forest!

Kinnickinnic River Land Trust (KRLT) is launching a fundraising campaign to raise the money needed to purchase a key 40-acre, old growth forested parcel of land in the lower river canyon downstream of the City of River Falls. The parcel contains 1,500 feet of river frontage and includes the mouth of Rocky Branch. The purchase will connect the River Falls School Forest, which has been landlocked for years, to Glen Park and River Hills Park.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for KRLT, the community of River Falls, and the River Falls School District. “A purchase agreement has been signed with the JoAnn Ailport-Dreistadt Estate and we are excited to move forward with raising the funds needed to make the purchase of the property a reality,” states KRLT Executive Director, Charlene Brooks. Successfully securing this 40-acre community forest will enhance public access to the Kinnickinnic River, increase angler opportunities, protect Rocky Branch, provide space for environmental education, and expand recreation.

“We would like to thank the JoAnn Ailport-Dreistadt Estate and the School District of River Falls for their collaboration and for their commitment to making this beautiful forest accessible to the people of this community for generations to come,” shares KRLT Board President, Alison Page.

The Community Forest site is located in parcel A. Parcel B is the access road that will allow foot traffic only.

Kinnickinnic River Land Trust (KRLT) is pleased to announce the publication of the Kinnickinnic Watershed Public Recreation Map. This two-sided map brochure is a high quality map of the Kinnickinnic watershed with all publicly accessible recreation sites identified with a legend to distinguish the type and owner characteristics. Insets of the three KRLT preserves are included. The map also includes matrix tables of different categories of recreation properties identifying the types of activities that are available.

The Kinnickinnic Watershed Public Recreation Map design and development were done in partnership with the University of Wisconson – River Falls through Geography Professor Charlie Rader. Many thanks to Charlie for his gifted contributions.

The River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau was also a project partner. The Wisconsin DNR made an advance purchase of the map. In addition to the KRLT and Chamber offices, maps are available from the following sponsors who supported the printing of the map:

  • Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop
  • Gray Goat Fly Fishing
  • Kinni Creek Lodge and Outfitters
  • Lund’s Fly Shop
  • Rush River Brewing Company
  • St. Croix Valley Adventures
  • Trout Unlimited-Kiap Tu Wish
  • West Wind Supper Club
